Saving a Reel or an Instagram video you have the right to keep, why private accounts will not work, and the difference between Instagram's own Save feature and downloading a file.
Instagram has no built-in download button for other people's posts. Its bookmark icon saves a link inside the app, not a file — lose access to the account or the post, and the bookmark leads nowhere. Downloading produces an actual MP4 you keep. Here is how to do it properly.
What you may save
- Your own Reels, posts and Stories. If you have lost the original from your phone, this is often the fastest way to recover it.
- Content you have been given permission to reuse — the normal situation for brands reposting a customer video, or for user-generated content campaigns.
- Nothing else. Reposting someone else's Reel to your own account without permission is copyright infringement, and Instagram removes accounts for it.
Step by step
- 1Open the Reel or video post. In the app, tap the three dots and choose Copy link; on the web, copy the URL from the address bar.
- 2Paste it into the tool on our home page and press Get Formats.
- 3Pick Download for the video with sound, or MP3 if you only want the audio.
Private accounts do not work, by design
If the account is private, or the post has been restricted, the video cannot be retrieved. That is not a limitation we intend to remove. A private post is private because its author chose that, and building a way around that choice would make this a tool for something quite different from what it is for.
Stories and their 24-hour window
Stories disappear from Instagram after 24 hours, so a Story link only works while the Story is still live. If you are archiving your own Stories, do it the same day. For anyone else's Story, the same permission rules apply — and screenshots of Stories are visible to their author in some circumstances, which people frequently forget.
Why Instagram video quality varies so much
Instagram re-encodes uploads aggressively, and it does so more than once for different surfaces and connection speeds. A downloaded file can therefore look softer than what you remember watching — the download is faithful to what Instagram is serving, and Instagram is serving a compressed copy. Nothing recovers detail that was discarded at upload. If quality genuinely matters, get the original file from whoever shot it.
